Sandy Bailey

The Arts & Music Factory is proud to introduce Sandy Bailey – a vocalist and songwriter whose heart-wrenchingly soulful voice and timeless songs are cutting to the core of listeners everywhere.

A musician from the start, Bailey grew up singing gospel music to congregations of hundreds in church and listening to bluegrass on the radio, but it wasn’t until early adulthood that she began to identify her own compositional style and melding of those influences.

She now sings with the unrefined edge of a folk singer, while still conveying the emotional, soulful delivery found in gospel music. Her songwriting also transcends genre --taking the best of folk, blues, gospel, and bluegrass, crafting familiar melodies, and pairing them with tragically honest lyrics.

Bailey’s debut EP, Raven’s Flesh, was recorded at the Pushkin Gallery in Greenfield, MA and features a haunting compilation of Bailey’s original compositions. Produced by jazz pianist Jeff D’Antona and engineered by Justin Pizzoferrato, Raven’s Flesh has a unique sonic soundscape created by the looming expanse of space at the Pushkin studio and it’s intentional use in the recording. Just as much a member of the band as the bass or guitar, the spatial element of the recording creates the moody, ethereal feeling that the songs necessitate.

And centered in that space is Sandy Bailey, whose magnetic, emotive voice and confessional lyrics pull in the listener. On the track “Velvet House” Bailey sings, “But I’m looking good from the outside / I’ll never tell a single soul / that I’m dying on the inside / of my velvet house painted with gold.” She then continues to the song’s anthem-like refrain, woven tightly with the vocal harmonies Bailey so often uses she sings, “Burn it down and start again,” movingly delivering the weight of her words.

Her unique and undeniable talent makes Sandy Bailey a riveting new artist to listen to. We subconsciously recognize her melodies even though we’ve never heard them before, we understand how she feels even though we’ve never met her – and it is this honesty that makes a great artist, one whose unadulterated, soulful sound will leave it’s mark on American roots music. Her unique and undeniable talent makes Sandy Bailey a riveting new artist to listen to.
